The Dual Handshake Principle
Unlike traditional proxies, ShadowTLS does not generate self-signed certificates, which are easily detected by modern filtering systems. During the initial contact, the client connects to a third-party white-listed site (such as a major CDN or bank), verifies the legitimacy of the TLS session in front of the censor, and then switches the payload to the secure proxy server.
Practical Setup Recommendations
- Use domains that support TLS 1.3 and the ALPN H2 protocol as your cover node.
- Pair ShadowTLS with Shadowsocks or Trojan protocols for maximum cryptographic resilience.
- Ensure the chosen cover site is physically close to your VPS location.
