How Tracking Beacons Work
Marketing trackers and scanners in public places constantly capture Bluetooth signals, building a precise map of your movements between storefronts. If your phone's radio stack isn't updated or has vulnerabilities, a nearby attacker can use specialized software to eavesdrop on your headphones or intercept Bluetooth keyboard input.
Simple Security Rules
- Turn off Bluetooth in your quick-settings panel as soon as you leave your car or finish listening to music
- Deny third-party apps (especially games and shopping apps) permission to scan for nearby devices
- Never accept random pairing requests from unknown devices on your screen
- Regularly update your phone's operating system to patch communication protocol vulnerabilities
