How scammers use stolen scans
Attackers mass-hack messenger profiles via phishing links and download all attachments from saved media sections. Documents are resold in closed databases, after which thieves use the borrowed passport details to open online wallets for laundering stolen funds or take out quick small loans on financial platforms.
How to safely send a document when necessary
- overlay a dense watermark on the image stating the purpose of transfer (e.g., "Only for Bank X")
- cover up your personal signature and serial number if they aren't strictly required by protocol
- send the file via disappearing messages with a self-destruct timer after viewing
- delete the sent image from the chat for both participants immediately after confirming receipt
