What is a DNS leak, and why can my ISP see websites even with a VPN on?

WEBSITE ADDRESS RESOLUTION REQUESTS BYPASS THE ENCRYPTED CHANNEL AND GO STRAIGHT TO YOUR ISP.
Encryption hides the page content itself, but the website name lookup might accidentally be handled by your provider's standard server. Because of this, your ISP continues logging the full list of resources you visit.

Cause of Hidden Leaks

When you click a link, your browser must resolve the exact node IP address via the Domain Name System (DNS). If the tunnel client fails to intercept system requests at the socket level or your router forces its own addresses, the operating system sends plaintext requests to your local ISP.
